From the warm glow of an early-morning bakery to the quiet luxury of automated living — One The Bakers building has stood at the corner of time, wearing each decade with grace. This is its story.
In the early years of the twentieth century, the building first opened its ground-floor doors as a neighbourhood bakery. The ovens ran from before dawn, filling the street with the scent of loaves and pastries.
The upper floors housed the baker’s family and a handful of lodgers — modest rooms above a thriving trade, the building already a small community unto itself.
By the mid-century, the neighbourhood had changed. The bakery passed on, and the ground floor welcomed a succession of small businesses. The building adapted quietly, its bones unchanged.
The upper floors became proper rented apartments. Generations of tenants came and went, but the building’s character — those generous windows, the worn stone staircase — remained a constant in a shifting town.
By the 1980s, the building underwent significant refurbishment — Original brickwork was cleaned and repointed, restoring the warmth of the original Victorian red brick that visitors see today.
The ground floor continued to welcome independent businesses. The upper floors were remodelled as comfortable apartments, and the interiors were upgraded to a modern standard.
The building still stands — ground floor businesses open to the street below, apartments occupying the middle floors. But something extraordinary has happened at the very top.
The uppermost floor has been transformed into Creston Automated Living — a modern luxury residence where heritage architecture meets intelligent design. Bespoke interiors, full home automation, and quiet, considered comfort: a fitting final chapter for a building that has always known how to evolve with the times.
The entire flat was stripped back to its bare bones and rebuilt from scratch — the roof was fully demolished and reconstructed with new timber beams and weatherproofing, every wall taken back to raw masonry, re-insulated and re-plastered, and all floors lifted, the subfloor renewed, and new flooring laid throughout. New double-glazed windows, full rewiring and replumbing complete the transformation.
Living Room – Replanned and redecorated from scratch, with new flooring, lighting, and finishes creating a bright, cohesive space.
